Trap Music
Trap music is a musical genre that started back in the early 2000s from Southern style hiphop as well as crunk in the Southern United States. It is distinguishable by its unique lyrical content and it's trademark sound, which blends 808 sub-bass kick drums, double-time, triple-time and much faster time division hi-hats, layered synthesizers, and "cinematic" strings. In 2012, a new wave of electronic music producers and DJs came forward who began mixing in elements of trap music into their music. This helped expand trap music's popularity among electronic dance music fans.Trap sounds different from hip hop much like rap sounds different. The lyrics are similar, but the bass is so intense that it makes the vocals come in secondary.
In 2012, new styles as well as developments of electronic music which blended parts of trap music, such as "acid trap", "trap-ah-ton", & "trapstep" began rising in popularity. A lot of these sub-genres mixed trap-style drum beats with EDM synths, creating "dirty, aggressive beats [and] very dark melodies." Electronic music producers, such as Diplo, TNGHT, Baauer, Flosstradamus, RL Grime, & Yellow Claw expanded the popularity of these versions of trap music, getting the attention of EDM music fans.
The new wave of the trap music genre has been coined as EDM Trap and compared to the dubstep genre because of its fast rise in popularity. The ever evolving EDM Trap has seen incorporations & stylistic influences from other musical genres like Dubstep with Rebecca Haithcoat of LA Weekly saying "You could basically call it the next step of dubstep. It plays at a club-ready 140 bpm while keeping dubstep's craze-inducing drops" and it is continuing to grow in popularity In the latter half of 2012, new offshoots of trap music developed gaining viral online popularity as well as making a huge impact on electronic dance music.
Trap Music Today
